Mark Westbrook as Playwright

Mark Westbrook began his playwrighting career after working in HMP Shotts and Barlinnie in Scotland.  His first play (unproduced) Sentence, about his experience of working in prison, opened many doors and helped introducing him to people who supported his writing.   Mark wrote a musical called Deep Water as part of an Arts Council of Northern Ireland commission that was performed at the Waterfront Hall in Belfast.    Mark Westbrook's plays include:  Casual Acts of Violence in the Kingdom of Men (Foyle Arts Centre), Matryoshka (The Arches, Glasgow), Swingboat (James Arnott Theatre, Glasgow) and Our Brethren Shield (Foyle Arts Centre, Derry).

Mark Westbrook's first full length play The Emotional Life of Furniture was premiered at The Tron Theatre in Glasgow in October 2008.  Read a sample speech from the play.  For a work-in-progress excerpt from Mark Westbrook's latest play 'Forgetting Dad', read here.

"Impressive flair, competence and energy...real pace, passion and intelligence...sharp perceptions and memorable moments".     Joyce McMillan - The Scotsman
